The Indian tennis duo of Rohan Bopanna and DivijSharan clinched the 6th gold medal for India on Day 6 of Asian Games 2018, after they beat Kazakhstan’s Denis Yevseyev and AleksandrBublik 6-3, 6-4 in the men’s doubles tennis event.
The 18th edition of Asian Games is scheduled to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from August 18 to September 2, 2018. The opening ceremony will begin at 5:30 pm Indian time, with most of the events scheduled to commence from August 19. Indian wrestler BajrangPunia snatched the spotlight on the Day 1 of the 18th Asian Games by opening India’s gold medal account.
The Union Minister of Steel, Chaudhary Birender Singh on August 27, 2018 unveiled the corporate sports policy for Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) under the Ministry of Steel in New Delhi.
The policy will provide a framework for the promotion of sports by Steel Ministry CPSEs. Speaking on the occasion, Chaudhary Birender Singh said that sports are an indicator of a country’s economic development and strength and the CPSEs, under the Steel Ministry, will strive to groom medal aspirants for the Olympic Games.
Former India spinner Ramesh Powar was on August 14, 2018 named head coach of the Indian women’s national cricket team till the ICC World T20, which is scheduled to be held in November 2018.
Powar was brought in as the interim coach of the team in July by the BCCI until they found a replacement for TusharArothe, who resigned as the coach of the women’s team five months after being appointed.
The Union Sports Minister, RajyavardhanRathore announced on August 6, 2018 that a games period will be made mandatory in all schools from 2019 onwards. Along with this, the Minister said that the Ministry of Education will ensure a 50 per cent reduction in the syllabus.
The move is a huge boost to the growth of sports in India. Explaining the decision, Rathore said, “we have come to a stage where sports is not a part of education, it is education.”
